Fat Mum Coffee Shop, nestled conveniently at 30a Jalan Lanang in the heart of Pekan Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia, is a must-visit destination for anyone eager to experience authentic Foochow Chinese cuisine in a humble, down-to-earth setting. Though it bears the name "Coffee Shop," this establishment shines as one of Sibu’s most cherished local Chinese eateries, known for decades of serving savory, soul-satisfying dishes that strike the perfect balance between tradition and flavor.
Step inside, and you’ll immediately sense the warmth of a family-run atmosphere, where hospitality is as rich as the aromas wafting from the kitchen. Despite the simplicity of the décor and the absence of air conditioning, Fat Mum Coffee Shop excels in creating a genuine dining experience that feels welcoming, relaxed, and unpretentious. Don’t expect polished modernity here; instead, you’re embraced by a charming, lived-in ambiance filled with personality—from the thoughtfully decorated ceiling to the quirky touches found even in the restroom. It’s these touches that reveal the owners' heartfelt dedication and creativity, making every visit feel unique.
At the core of Fat Mum’s allure lies its robust menu, bursting with favored Foochow flavors that keep locals and visitors coming back again and again. The pork satay is the unquestionable star—tender, juicy, and expertly marinated with a smoky sweetness that melts in your mouth. Several reviewers have raved about this dish, calling it a “must-try” and praising the softness and depth of flavor in each bite. Alongside the satays, dishes like the black pepper mutton and salt-fried prawns showcase a masterful balance of spices and freshness, delighting the palate with their bold yet comforting tastes. The “cangkok Manis telur” and the triple-layer salted pork are other standout items that offer hearty, satisfying flavors that feel both familiar and distinct.
Service here matches the food’s approachable nature. The owner, Alex, and the friendly staff offer excellent hospitality, often guiding guests through the menu with friendly recommendations tailored to individual tastes. Whether it’s your first time or a returning visit, the team’s warmth and attentiveness boost the overall experience, making you feel more like a friend than a customer.
One of the unique highlights at Fat Mum Coffee Shop is its offering of local craft beverages. Enthusiasts will appreciate the availability of Hornbeer, a local brew that executive Chloe Tan Hui Ting likens to the renowned German Franziskaner wheat beer. Alongside this, traditional local sodas complement the meals perfectly, making each sip an extension of Sibu’s cultural riches.
True to its reputation, the shop can get busy, and parking is limited, but the quick turnover and prompt service mean you won’t wait long to indulge in the delicious fare. Whether you stop by for a casual family meal or a hearty gathering with friends, Fat Mum Coffee Shop serves up satisfying portions at wallet-friendly prices, making it an unbeatable choice in Sibu’s vibrant culinary scene.
In sum, Fat Mum Coffee Shop is more than just a place to eat—it’s a window into Sibu’s heritage, where authentic Foochow dishes, warm hospitality, and a distinctive atmosphere combine into an unforgettable dining journey. For anyone seeking flavorful comfort food with a local twist, all roads lead here.

One of the well-known Chinese Restaurants in Sibu for decades serving a selection of tasty Foochow dishes at a very reasonable price. Usually a wait due to limited seating but food is served quite fast. Parking is also limited.

It was really a nice Chinese restaurant to have a casual meal with family and friends. I could feel the creativity and effort of the owners in running their business by decorating almost every inch of the shop, inclusive of the ceiling and the toilet. In terms of the food, the price was reasonable while most of the food I had there was tasty. The fish was exceptionally fresh and tasty. It was definitely worth more than the price charged. I will surely go back for another visit when time comes.

Great service and hospitality by the owner Alex. This restaurant has such a unique decoration. One of the few places where you can get great local beer (hornbeer). The wheat beer tastes exactly like German beer- Franziskaner. You can also get local made soda here. Highly recommend anyone to try this restaurant!
